PENGUINS ARE STILL LEADING THE WORLD

Mayor Bob Clare gives a new meaning to the term 'bully off' before starting Penguin's match with Peelers on Saturday.

UNISEX ARRIVED at the Penguin International mixed hockey festival in its final hours on Monday. Perhaps to confuse umpires mindful of the five male, five female outfield players rule, same lads wore skirts.

The beards were the main giveaway but, though frivolity is usually kept below the surface during play, the atmosphere of this event still mocked the umpires' warning cards on sale at one stall. They were destined to stay in the official pockets.

This Worthing Borough Council publicity and tourism award-winning festival remains the world's largest. Its 118 teams this year outscored the Isle of Man event by 20.

Park pitches

Its 334 matches in three days included an estimated 20 gained by the omission, for the first time in the event's 12-year history, of the festival match. The 18 pitches available comprised seven at Palatine Park, two at the Sports Centre, and four at Worthing Sixth Form College.

Struggling

Gerry Brassington, one of the stalwart organisers and often a critic of the local authorities on behalf of an event struggling for sufficient facilities, praised this year's council assistance. 'The groundstaff engineers have done the best with what they have to offer,' he said on Monday.

The pitches are clearly marked and remarked after wear and tear and the goal netting repaired. They have given us good service - possibly the best we've ever had.'

Overseas teams to materialise were the Belgians, Park HC from Waterloo, and two from West Germany, Merz Shule from Stuttgart and Duren 99 from near Cologne.
